The seeds for Trevor's music were planted early. His life led him on an uneasy road. He didn't have a father and his single mother struggled to provide for his needs. His grandmother helped in raising him because his mother struggled with drugs. When he was young his mother and him attended a gospel church. This is where he would soak in the music that would come to influence him so much. He says, “Music has to have conviction. I need to believe that people actually experience what they are singing about.” Because of this, Trevor is thankful for his hard and hurtful past. He can mix his past with hope, which gives him a larger spectrum to work with in his songwriting. Since Trevor started playing the independent music scene 10 years ago, his fan base has grown immensely. Less than two years from writing his first song, he routinely played packed out shows in San Diego. He has received radio airplay and has started touring as often as he can. All the time spent on the road and playing shows has allowed Trevor to craft his abilities and truly create his own sound. Known world wide as The Queen of Boogie Woogie, The Sultana of Swing, and The Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, has had a day named after her by the city of San Diego in 2008, and has won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. She has recorded over 12 albums under her own name, securing an international award from The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis for Best Self Produced Album (Sophisticated Ladies). She was the beehive wearing music director and longtime pianist for blues diva Candye Kane, through the 90s, appearing on many of her albums, touring world wide (France, Germany, England, The Czech Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, and more) as well as all over the US and parts of Canada. Sue has also toured Switzerland, Russia, The Netherlands, and Argentina under her own name. Born a musical prodigy in former Yugoslavia, Mikan started his professional jazz career as a teenager whose immense talent was quickly recognised by top musicians, the audiences and music critics alike. Throughout the '80s he remained a major feature on the thriving Yugoslav jazz scene. In the early '90s, however, he decided to pursue bigger musical challenges, at first in New York, and ten years later in San Diego, where he regularly shares the stage with the likes of Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Allison Adams-Tucker, Chuck McPherson, Bob Magnusson, Rob Thorsen, Jamie Shadowlight, and many other notable performers. On piano or synthesizer, Mikan's fiery performances continue to thrill and excite his audiences. He connects jazz fans in many different settings, from concert halls to small clubs to street corners. THE ROBOTS BY CAROLYN CHEN A WORLD PREMIERE CHAMBER OPERA Sung in English with supertitles in English and Spanish. Approximate running time 1 hr and 45 minutes with one intermission. This genre-bending operatic adaptation of an early sci-fi play from 1920 — R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) by Karel Čapek — takes place on an isolated island where a workforce of mass-produced humanoid robots gradually gains self-awareness and revolts against the human creators. Čapek’s play first coined the term “robot” from the Czech word for “slave”, and was a strong condemnation of exploitative labor practices in the early 20th Century. Performed by a diverse cast of some of the best singers in the region, Chen’s exuberant and eclectic score will come to life in this revolutionary new production, immersing the entire audience into the action of the robot uprising! If you would like to enlist in the Robot Army, we encourage you to bring a colander from home. It's the only way our Robots can tell humans apart from the more sophisticated Robot Worker. About the composer: CAROLYN CHEN has made music for supermarket, demolition district, and the dark. Her work reconfigures the everyday to retune habits of our ears through sound, text, light, and movement. Her studies of the guqin, a Chinese zither traditionally played for private meditation in nature, have informed her thinking on listening in social spaces. Recent projects include an audio essay on a scream and commissions for Klangforum Wien and the LA Phil New Music Group. Described by The New York Times as “the evening’s most consistently alluring … a quiet but lush meditation,” Chen’s work has been supported by the American Academy in Berlin, the Fulbright Program, ASCAP Foundation’s Fred Ho Award, Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, Stanford University Sudler Prize, and commissions from Green Umbrella, MATA Festival, and impuls Festival. The work has been presented at festivals and exhibitions in 25 countries, at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kitchen, Disney Hall (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Institute for Provocation (Beijing). She has been fortunate to work with ensembles including SurPlus, Southland, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Aperture, andPlay, loadbang, koan, Dog Star Orchestra, The Reader’s Chorus, Pamplemousse, Chamber Cartel, orkest de ereprijs, S.E.M., red fish blue fish, Wild Rumpus, and The Syndicate for New Arts. Chen earned a Ph.D. in music from UC San Diego, and a M.A. in Modern Thought and Literature and B.A. in music from Stanford University, with an honors thesis on free improvisation and radical politics. She lives in Los Angeles.
