San Diego’s arts community is rallying to support their Los Angeles counterparts who lost studios, homes, and livelihoods in the devastating Pacific Palisades and Altadena wildfires. This spring, Union Hall Gallery will host a two-weekend Fine Art and Craft Sale on Friday, April 4 – Sunday, April 6 and Friday, April 11 – Sunday, April 13, featuring over 400 donated pieces spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and more, to raise funds for the LA art community. One hundred percent of proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the Grief and Hope: LA Art World Fire Relief Fund, providing funds to artists and art workers following the January 2025 fires. Featured in the sale are renowned artists like Italo Scanga, Paula Wittner, James Hubbell, Larry Groff, Margaret Larlham, Jane Culp, and Joe Garcia, alongside emerging voices, university students, tattoo artists, and fiber artists. Inside the 2,500-square-foot space, the sale will feel like an immersive gallery experience, with pieces rotated as they sell—encouraging visitors to return throughout the event. The collection will be eclectic and varied, spanning abstract to realism - surrealism, impressionism, expressionism, fauvism, whimsy, plein-air, ceramics, glass, metalwork, fiber arts, and beyond. With prices ranging from $10 to $5,000, the sale is designed to make art accessible for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned collector or someone simply looking to support a worthy cause. Learn to needle felt! Oh, butterflies! Fluttering bursts of happy colors! In this class, we will be making a butterfly out of wool, using needle felting techniques. Needle felting is a process where wool fibers are pressed together using long, special needles of different sizes, turning wool into felt. Because of the sharpness of the needles, this class is for students 12+ years old, and guards will be provided. During these three hours we will cut out butterflies from wool felt , “paint” the wings with wool, and shape the body dimensionally. Your butterfly can be turned into a brooch or hung on the walls. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome. Materials fee of $5 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. This workshop is part of Craft Collective’s 2nd annual Fiber Fest! Join in the main day of festivities on Saturday, June 14th, for a day filled with fiber fun! It’ll be a vibrant celebration of natural textiles and sustainability, bringing together fiber artists, artisans, sustainability advocates, and local farmers. The title evokes not only the bodily reaction of flushing skin—often involuntary and tied to emotion, exposure, or embarrassment—but also the ephemeral hues of tenderness, shame, desire, and nostalgia. It asks: What does it mean to be emotionally visible in a world that often demands detachment? Vanessa Rishel invites viewers to explore vulnerability and softness through her most recent and experimental works. Drawing on personal memory, sensory perception, and speculative imagination, her practice negotiates the thresholds between inner affect and external expression. Through color, and spatial arrangement, Rishel creates atmospheres that oscillate between comfort and unease—spaces where emotion is not only seen, but felt. A house is more than a container for the things we spend a lifetime collecting, storing, arranging, and insuring. It is the repository of our memories, the life we spend there. We will make an accordion book with text and images of your home and/or family members or ancestors that reflect your perceptions, memories, family relations, and personal history. The structure of the pages will reflect the book’s subject, with openings that represent doors, windows, and the movement from room to room inside a house. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. In addition, you will want to bring room layout drawings, photographs, and/or black-and-white-on-paper printouts of your home or other drawings of the interior or exterior (sizes to be emailed once you have registered). Optional/recommended: 12” centering ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials for the pages and cover will be provided to create the books.
