An array of K-12 student performance groups from across the Vista Unified School District (VUSD) will illuminate the Vista Village Winterfest and tree lighting celebration this Sunday, December 8 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Vista Cinépolis Cinemas (25 Main St, 92083). The nine VUSD performance groups will perform choir, a string ensemble, Ballet Folklorico, ukuleles, steel drums, and more. “I am thrilled we have such a wide variety of ages from elementary through high school who want to perform at the Vista Village Winterfest. It is important that our students have opportunities to showcase their art in the community,” said Susan Stuber, VUSD Visual and Performing Arts Department Resource Teacher, who worked with the district’s performing arts directors to organize the Vista Village Winterfest music and dance showcase. Stuber added, “For those who attend the event, their heart will be filled with joy as they hear the sweet sounds of steel drums, choirs, instrumental ensembles, and ukuleles; as well as watch a variety of dance performances. There will even be an opportunity for everyone to sing a few carols during the actual tree lighting ceremony.” Alongside the diversity of performances, families are invited to enjoy a Christmas film at the Cinépolis Cinemas and play movie trivia to win Santa-themed prizes or shop at the makers market and craft fair organized by the VUSD Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) featuring arts and crafts, games, and gifts to purchase. Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos | Athenaeum Jazz The spring series opens on Thursday, March 27, at Scripps Research with a long-anticipated local debut as a leader of acclaimed Cuban composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos, featuring Josh Jones on drums, Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on bass, and Sheldon Brown on sax, clarinet, and flute. Sosa is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. His musical trajectory traces the African diaspora from Cuba to Brazil; from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities; from San Francisco and New York to his current home base in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban origins, Sosa fashions a spirited vision of uncompromising artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. Nominated for seven Grammy awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C., for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. The New York Times wrote, “Sosa's music is the unifying sort, yoking together Africa and jazz and Latin America and hip-hop. He makes it work, being one of those rare birds whose keyboard skills are near those of Chick Corea and Chucho Valdes.” Billboard commented, “Sosa is one of the truly illuminated minds of world jazz. LOS/NR cordially invites you to our next Opening Reception for "Framing Identity" highlighting the interplay between the intimate and the universal exploration of what defines us through the vision of four women artists—collaborative artists Katie Hargrave and Meredith Laura Lynn, photographer Hannah Altman and painter Jennifer Ruth Evans. The question of where self comes from has intrigued us for generations and theories have been established from Jung’s archetypes to Freud’s id, ego and superego to explain who we are and how self develops. The artists in this exhibition use the visual medium to explore personal, cultural and societal constructs of self. Their work unfolds as storytelling that investigates identity to spark a dialogue and foster deeper understanding of ourselves and our meaning. This is our Guest Curator Show running from March 8 to April 12, 2025, organized by Caleb Cain Marcus (MFA Columbia University.) Marcus has judged and participated as a reviewer for the Arnold New Prize, Critical Mass, Medium, LACP, NEPR and Review Santa Fe. He exhibited at the Ross Museum, the National Academy of Sciences in DC, Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, the Houston Center for Photography, Tufts Art Gallery, and Palm Beach Photo Center. His work is the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Museum, the High Museum of Art, Norton Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and has been published widely including PDN, American Photo, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic, Orion and Audubon, Feature Shoot, Musee, Fraction, F-stop, Slate, Lens Culture, Smithsonian, My Modern Met and Hyperallergic.
