Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, is an American holiday celebrated annually on June 19. It is the oldest, national commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S. This year marks the 157th anniversary of when Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War ended and that enslaved people were now free. This announcement was more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth offers each of us the opportunity to acknowledge hard truths from U.S. history, celebrate the liberation of the enslaved ancestors of African Americans, and work together to advance racial healing, equity, and justice in our communities. The NAACP has hosted the North San Diego County Juneteenth for over 55 years. This year is particularly notable with it designated as a federal holiday after over 156 years of its existence. Highlights of this year's event promote the importance of education, contributions, and achievement. As part of San Diego Ballet’s world premiere of "Carnival of the Animals," Mandell Weiss Gallery presents a juried art exhibit celebrating wildlife through diverse artistic expressions. Featuring multigenerational voices, the exhibit captures the mystery and energy of animals, from awe-inspiring to whimsical, inviting viewers to reflect on our shared connection with all living beings. The exhibit coincides with the ballet’s dazzling performance, featuring a Latin jazz score composed by San Diego’s celebrated trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, performed live by the Gilbert Castellanos Quartet. This vibrant collaboration of visual and performing arts invites audiences to immerse themselves in a unique celebration of the natural world and the arts. In this comprehensive class, students will learn the intricate art of staining porcelain and using colored clay to craft stunning patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces. The class will cover all aspects of the technique from coloring and preparing porcelain, learning how to build a variety of patterns and learning how to form and structure pieces. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate ceramic enthusiasts incorporating a selection of hand-building techniques as well as tips for wheel-throwing with the patterns. All students receive one month of free membership at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course.
