Tim Pyles is a longtime San Diego resident, who grew up in La Jolla with over 25 years of experience via radio and television broadcasting. Currently hosting radio shows on KXFM, Indie X FM and KNSJ, he’s previously been part of the on-air talent at legendary alternative radio station 91X, as well as FM94/9. His current radio stints specialize in local music from the Southern California/Tijuana area, with an additional program that focuses on new music releases from around the world. Meanwhile, Pyles has also spent many years interviewing bands and hosting events for numerous media outlets, including "SoundDiego," a locally produced television show that aired on NBC. A tireless champion of San Diego’s music, Pyles has also spent many years booking local bands, including shows for the iconic music venues, the Casbah in San Diego, and the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, with new concerts regularly announced. Pyles recently added podcast host to his resume. He now hosts two podcasts; "SoundCheck Flix," in which musicians talk about their favorite movie, and the other is "Bar Talk," where actors, musicians and other creatives are interviewed in a bar setting.   • McAlister Institute is excited to host its 13th Annual 5K Walk for Sobriety on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at NTC Park in Liberty Station. This event serves as a way to bring help and hope to the thousands of individuals and families struggling through the unforgiving cycle of addiction and marks McAlister Institute’s 48th year of transforming lives, one person at a time. The Walk for Sobriety is not only an opportunity to raise funds for life-saving services, but also a positive way to increase awareness and support the power of recovery. Walkers, runners, and online supporters can spread a powerful message on the day of the walk by wearing the number of days they—or their loved ones—have been clean and sober, and what it means to them. Registration costs $35 per adult and $5 per child (ages 12 and under). All proceeds from the Walk for Sobriety benefit McAlister Institute, one of San Diego's leading resources for substance abuse treatment and recovery programs.   • Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Does Soul Food Need a Warning Label?”, with James Beard Award winner Adrian Miller, at 10:30 a.m. October 19, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. Miller will enlighten and entertain us with his extensive knowledge of soul food. What soul food is, and its surprisingly long and fascinating history, origins, misconceptions and delights will all be explained in full. Adrian received an A.B in International Relations from Stanford University in 1991, and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1995. From 1999 to 2001, Miller served as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton with his Initiative for One America – the first free-standing office in the White House to address issues of racial, religious and ethnic reconciliation. Miller went on to serve as a senior policy analyst for Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. From 2004 to 2010, he served on the board for the Southern Foodways Alliance. In June 2019, Adrian lectured in the Masters of Gastronomy program at the Università di Scienze Gastronomiche (nicknamed the “Slow Food University”) in Pollenzo, Italy. He is currently the executive director of the Colorado Council of Churches and, as such, is the first African American, and the first layperson, to hold that position. In 2018, Adrian was awarded the Ruth Fertel “Keeper of the Flame” Award by the Southern Foodways Alliance, in recognition of his work on African American Foodways. His first book Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time, won the James Beard Award for Scholarship and Reference in 2014. His second book, The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed our First Families, From the Washingtons to the Obamas was published on Presidents Day, 2017. Adrian’s third book, Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue, appeared in 2021. The event is free and open to the public.
