Sean Kurth serves as the director of membership at KPBS. Sean’s role is central to the station’s ability to serve members by leading a division that includes audience services, engagement, administration, acquisition and on-air fundraising for TV, radio and digital. Since he joined KPBS in March 2024, the station has experienced a significant increase in membership and local financial support – which Sean attributes to the spirit of generosity from San Diegans as well as the excellence of his team and partners.

Join us on June 29 from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. in the woodshop for this 3-hour kumiko skill-building workshop! Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. Plenty of free parking! Facilitator Bio: Catherine Greitzer is thrilled to teach her first class with The Actor’s Place! She earned her Masters degree and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts focusing on Theater Arts, costuming and stage makeup. She was a founding member of the PACT Theatre out of New York and Gross National Product Comedy team in Washington DC. She's been a director, actress, production and administrative assistant and an active member of advisory boards. (Somewhere along the line she also earned her MA in Teaching ESL!) Bringing new projects to theatre companies, Catherine has acted as producer, director and Assistant to the Playwright for the award-winning show, "Pushcart Tony" in Chicago. On the West Coast, Catherine has written reviews for several productions including for Carlsbad's New Village Arts. Ms. Greitzer has acted and directed at Oceanside's Brooks Theatre as well as with Fallbrook's Senior Theatre, "AGE Upon Stage." Catherine is SO happy to continue working with adults at FSA's "Readers Theatre" and after school with teens in "ACT UP! A Teen Drama Club." Kumeyaay historian Ethan Banegas Luiseño-Kumeyaay (SDSU-American Indian Studies) discusses the process to develop a community-engaged comic that speaks from the perspective of the Kumeyaay people. This comic is a way to tell stories of Kumeyaay people from past to present and engage with their own communities, schools, and beyond. Hear more about how tribal historians are driving the work of this visual storytelling project as a creative team brings it to life. About Ethan Ethan grew up on the Barona Reservation in San Diego County. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History, Religious Studies, and Political Science in 2009 and his Master of Arts degree in History in 2017 from the University of San Diego (USD). Banegas is owner of Kumeyaay.com and Historian for the San Diego History Center, which operates the Junípero Serra Museum. He was first published in 2017 (Indian Gaming in the Kumeyaay Nation). In 2020, he published the Kumeyaay Oral History Project, a community-based research project, after collecting thirty-three personal interviews, video-taped oral histories, and photographs from San Diego’s First People. In 2024, he published two comics—“Beyond Gaming” and “Our Past, Present, and Future”—and served as project director and author of the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project. About the Speaker: Prior to coming to UC San Diego, Palermo was a professor in structural Engineering at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, which he joined in 2009. He started his career as a Faculty in 2005 as Assistant Professor (tenured) at Politecnico di Milano, Department of Structural Engineering. Palermo has three patents, over 400 publications in international journals and conference proceedings. Palermo is a member of several associations and is a Fellow of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), Engineering New Zealand, the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE). He served as President of the Concrete NZ Learned Society in 2021-2022 and New Zealand Head Delegate of the fib (Federation International du Beton) 2015-2023. Palermo is a passionate teacher and received several awards at the University of Canterbury. In 2021 Palermo was awarded as the “Most Influential International Accelerated Bridge Construction Person of the Year Outside U.S.” in Academia at the 2021 Accelerated Bridge Construction Conference in Miami.
