  • Learn from Keith Chan and Irene Gonzalez about the use of masks in Mesoamerica as a case study of cultural contact and change. They will discuss the archaeology masks as ritual and funerary items in societies such as Teotihuacan, as well as explore the community role of masks and mask makers in present day danzas. Keith and Irene will also describe their methodology and experiences in generating 3D models of a mask collection at San Diego State University and their progress in incorporating them in education. Meet your lecturers: Keith Chan is a local anthropology instructor at Grossmont College, MiraCosta College, and San Diego State University. He is especially interested in using immersive technology in his teaching to bring students face-to-face with culture and biology. He created the virtual anthropology museum AnVRopomotron, which won the first Poly Award for Best Educational Experience, and is working on PaleoCalifornia, which turns the Pleistocene into a virtual reality theme park ride. He was also a recent research fellow at SDSU's Virtual Immersive Learning and Teaching center, in which he launched the current project on masks. Irene Gonzalez received her M.A. in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University, where her research focused on cultural preservation. Her work has explored the importance of community museums, specifically in Mexico, where she conducted field research in Oaxaca. She is currently the Collections Coordinator for the Mesoamerican Mask Collection at SDSU’s Center for Latin American Studies. Irene is passionate about bridging technology and cultural heritage in ways that are equitable and grounded in deep respect for Indigenous knowledge systems. Sue Palmer and Liz Ajuzie Known worldwide as the Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sultana of Swing, and Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, had a day named after her by the city in 2008, and won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. Liz Ajuzie is a captivating, powerhouse vocalist who has blended masterfully with Sue Palmer in their collaborations in recent years Walt Richards Walt Richards began performing on guitar while still in high school. Within a year he had added banjo, soon becoming one of Southern California's best-known players, with multiple wins at Topanga in the 1960s and 70s. He also toured nationally with the Eddystone Singers and the Appalachians in the 60s. Although offered other opportunities related to his degree, music kept drawing him back and he started teaching guitar and banjo at a San Diego music store in 1963. Walt is celebrating over 50 years of playing and teaching music in the San Diego area. As a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, he has worked with many diverse musical groups, including doing studio work and live theater (The Old Globe and Starlight theaters in San Diego), besides being a solo and group performer. Earlier work for television earned an Emmy for Walt and partner Vickie Cottle. His most recent television credits include train songs sung for a documentary originally commissioned by Disney.
  • Artistic Director, Christian Tordahl takes the stage again leading the talented Hillcrest Wind Ensemble for what promises to be a night of fun and excitement. The ensemble presents “Summer Fun” a collection of light wind ensemble music and music from movies and the Broadway stage, on Saturday, June 28, at Linder Hall at the First United Methodist Church of San Diego, 2111 Camino del Rio South, in Mission Valley.
