San Diego farmers and farms are the focus of "California Grown, Plein Air" exhibition at the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center May 17 – June 20, 2025. In the Spring of 2025, plein air painters from around San Diego County painted at farms, documenting the diverse types of farms in the region. Juror Katie Stokes, the editor of Edible San Diego Magazine, will select her favorite artworks during the reception, Saturday May 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. "Edible San Diego magazine has been celebrating local food in farms and gardens for 17 years. Our region's many beautiful valleys, hills, creeks, rich history and diverse plant and animal life make it a haven to grow food or enjoy the harvests of farmers, ranchers and fishers. We are delighted to support this show and the Bonita Historical Society to share the artists' perspectives and talents on this delicious topic."- Katie Stokes Artists in the exhibition include: Liz Abeyta, Andrew ‘Drew’ Bandish, Lorraine Marie Cote, Brian Gibson, Rose Irelan, Margaret Larlham, Chrysanne Lowe, Frankie Martin, Doreen Mattingly, Carmelita Molina, Michelle Montrose, Kathryn Peterson, Nina Pierson, Indu Ramkumar, Elisabeth Refn, Jenny Rivera, Sarah Sullivan, Valorie Thompson, Joyce Trinh and Mehl Lawson Sketchbooks by members of San Diego Urban Sketchers will also be featured in the exhibition. Farms and regions featured in the exhibition include: Coastal Roots Farm, Highland Valley Oranges, Stein Family Farm, Rafferty Farms, Rancho del Sol, Point Loma Lighthouse Keeper's Kitchen Garden, San Diego Lavender Fields, Poway Farmers Market, Wild Willow Farm, Tierrasanta Community Garden, Coastal Garden, Kitchen Garden on the Pier, Carlsbad Flower Fields, Rohr Park A Paint-Out in Bonita will be with artist Mehl Lawson on Friday, May 16th. Participants can meet at the museum at 9 a.m. to find maps and coffee for the paint-out. Artwork from the paint-out will be displayed for sale in the “wet gallery”. Artist Rose Irelan will be leading a plein air painting workshop on Friday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is required through the museum website on the exhibitions page. About Lori Bell Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. She has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. She is a three-time Global Music Award recipient recognized for her recordings, compositions, and arrangements. In 2016, Lori paid heartfelt tribute to her family and birthplace on her critically acclaimed album Brooklyn Dreaming, her 10th CD, earning four-star ratings from Jazz Journal UK, Jazz Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Downbeat Magazine, which chose it as “Best Albums of 2016.” Huffington Post also chose Brooklyn Dreaming for their “Best of Jazz 2016”. Veteran jazz critic Scott Yanow chose it as one of his Top 25 Best Jazz CDs of 2016. It also won a Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement for compositions and arrangements. Lori has toured in Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong. She has also performed in high-profile ensemble settings at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, SOKA Performing Arts Center, The Wadsworth Theatre at UCLA, and most recently, on a project of jazz arrangements and classical compositions for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Library. She has performed three times at the Gala for the National Flute Association, most recently in 2016. In addition to her global renown as a performer and recording artist, Lori is a respected force in music education. She is currently on the SDSU faculty as an Instructor of Flute and studio teacher and over the years, has privately taught hundreds of students of all ages in both classical flute technique and jazz styling, jazz piano (her secondary instrument), theory, composition and arranging at her studio in San Diego. This period was pivotal in the evolution of his art practice from a photorealistic water media-based practice to large scale expressionistic, symbolist works in impasto oil paint, imbuing ominous, apocalyptic and other-worldly scenes of imaginary landscapes, reflecting a tumultuous time of his own personal growth and change. When managed poorly, storm water run-off can erode and wash away topsoil that can pollute our waterways with sediment, chemicals, and nutrients. Join us at the beautiful Water Conservation Garden to learn how to combat these concerns, whether in your small backyard or larger farm or ranch. Solana Center Educator Deanna Milton and guest speaker Craig Kolodge, PhD, Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control will explore effective compost application as a means of watershed protection through a case study of the manure composting demonstration site at Ramona’s International Equestrian Center. This workshop will conclude with a tour of the Water Conservation Garden’s watershed protection features. Panelist: Craig Kolodge, Ph.D., is the former academic advisor, field plant pathologist and county director for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in Santa Clara County. He currently serves as the Business Development and Sustainability Manager for San Pasqual Valley Soils. Craig is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and expert in the use of compost-based Sustainable Management Practices (SMPs) for stormwater management and industrial pollution management (Trainer of Record for Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner – QISP statewide program).
