Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Mondays, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 14 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Explore natural dye color! Sunday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 2-hour workshop, explore eco-bundle dye, the art of infusing natural pigments onto fibers. Join fiber artist Jeanine Ertl and share in the ephemeral, mindful and magical beauty of this serendipitous dye process. You will learn about the gentle, fleeting nature of a diverse array of botanical and kitchen dyes while completing the process from start to finish—mordanting bundling, steaming and finishing. Each student will create two unique silk or cotton squares or scarves. Colors will shift and change before your eyes as you place natural dyestuffs, steam, unroll, and enjoy! And while bundles steam, we will talk about exploring the potential dyes in our homes, gardens and local area. Students are welcome to bring in their favorite flowers to explore using in your bundle. Each participant will leave with a booklet on the Eco-Bundle Dye process and two bundle dyed pieces. Ages 12+ years welcome, or 8+ years with an adult. If adult and child would like to make their own pieces, please purchase two spaces. To Honor Mental Health Week 2025, Oceanside International Film Festival invites the artistic communities of Oceanside & Beyond to attend "THE ROAD BACK': A Mental Health Film Series for the Mind, Body & Soul. This Special Film Showcase In-Partnership with the Oceanside Theatre Company Celebrates the Vital Role of the Arts in the Healing Process, Mental Well-Being and the Resilience of the Soul. As well as the importance of having a Community Base in doing so. This 80 Minute Showcase is to be followed by a Q&A Panel Discussion and features the following short films: "ALONE TOGETHER" - After breaking off their budding relationship, Julian and Devon struggle to return to their lonely lives apart. With a unique storytelling device, the audience is able to view two characters' stories at once. Directed by Peter Murphy | Rochester, NY | Animation | 10 Minutes "WILD SEA" - "Wild Sea" delves into the life of Jeff Allen, a trailblazing figure in the world of Sea Kayaking. The film traces Jeff's journey from his formative years to his role as one of the foremost Sea Kayak guides and coaches of our time. As we accompany Jeff on his odyssey, we are immersed in the depths of his past, including his experiences in the military and are granted access to his own personal traumas. The film illuminates the transformative power of the sea as Jeff finds purpose and healing through his connection with the ocean. In particular, his 2004 Japan circumnavigation serves as a poignant testament to the cathartic influence of the ocean environment on his life. Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling.
