Painting using imagery in art is a fun way to tell a visual story. We use black and white photocopies of ancestors (found or real) as the underlying source to paint. This is a way of creating expressiveness with a subject built in. This way of art making can stand up to any art form found in galleries. In this workshop, learn how to incorporate painted photocopies in your work. Also, learn how to properly adhere paper seamlessly (to a canvas or board) without causing bubbles or creases. Students walk away with several paintings and a good understanding of this fun process. Materials: The $40 fee paid to the instructor at first class includes images, mediums, varnish, and 8" x 10" canvases and use of brushes, palette knife, markers, burnishing tool, gloves, paints. Not provided: aprons, palette paper, paper towels and water cans. Feel free to bring your own brushes, paints, palette paper, or any of the above-listed supplies. You may bring your own black and white images to fit 8" x 10" canvases or email jpegs of your images to Lisa to prepare. Images need to be sent to Lisa (lisabebi@gmail.com) by June 14. If you prefer to work with larger than 8" x 10", you must send your selected jpgs to Lisa two weeks prior to the workshop (by June 3) so she can send them out for processing. Email her immediately to let her know your plan and the size of your image(s). There may be an added cost. For those working in a larger format, they must bring their own proper-sized canvas. Sabrosas Latin Orchestra, San Diego’s first and only all-female salsa band and a 501(c)(3) organization, is celebrating five years of community, music, and fun in 2024. Founded after identifying a unique opportunity to unite as female musicians, the band brings a shared love of salsa and Latin music to audiences throughout Southern California. With a commitment to serving the community, Sabrosas partners with local schools through mentorship programs as well as organizations like the San Diego Latino Film Festival and San Diego Pride, enlivening the cultural landscape. Sabrosas is proud to have performed at venues such as Cafe Sevilla, the Belly Up, NAMM, and numerous community festivals. Looking ahead, the band is focusing on writing and recording original music, and of course, will continue to inspire and entertain, reinforcing their dedication to bringing Latin music to audiences of all ages. Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber. The Coronado Library is thrilled to announce that children's author Mac Barnett ("Triangle." "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole," "Mac Undercover"), will appear in person on Tuesday, May 20! Starting at 3:30 p.m., Mac will be at the library to meet fans and sign books. At 4 p.m., he will share picture book favorites and showcase the deeply impactful ways picture books blend words and illustrations, and even the turning of a page, to create a uniquely powerful reading experience. Mac will share his passion for picture books and invite children and adults alike to join him in celebrating what’s vibrant, joyful and inspiring about this quintessential – and highly participatory – American art form at this all ages and family friendly event. We were selected with the with the Coronado Unified School District as one of five libraries in the country that Mac would appear at in his role. As the only library West of the Rio Grande, we are thrilled to host Mac's only public appearance in Coronado for this tour. Each year, Barnett will visit only five locations as National Ambassador. Coronado selected out of 350 applicants for this honor and is his only site visit this school year and the very first one of his tour!
