  • Meet the candidates and learn what's at stake with KPBS' Nov. 5, 2024 election guide for the San Diego County Board of Education races.
  • Closing reception: 7:30-9:30 p.m. Nov. 9. The Hill Street Country Club is thrilled to announce the opening of "Safe Haven, Dark Corners," a powerful solo exhibition by South Bay San Diego artist Vanessa Rishel. The show will run from September 21st to November 10th, with a special opening reception on September 21st from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Vanessa Rishel's latest body of work delves into the complex realms of the psyche, utilizing soft focus dreamscapes to explore the inner workings of identity and self-perception. "Safe Haven, Dark Corners" showcases Rishel’s unique approach to painting, where childhood trinkets, plushies, and anime aesthetics become models for her evocative scenes. This method imbues her large scale monochrome oil paintings with a sense of theatricality and emotional depth. The exhibition features "Insomniac Dreamscapes," a series that incorporates baby angel figures and elements of storytelling akin to comics and teen angel art. These elements are deeply intertwined with real anxieties and the quest for self-acceptance. Rishel invites viewers into a liminal space where memory, inner child, and personal trauma confront everyday harsh realities. Her work serves as both a refuge and a medium for exploring existential themes, encouraging introspection and dialogue about mental health and personal identity. • Your ticket includes: Cruise around San Diego Bay aboard the gorgeous NERISSA yacht 60 minute intimate unplugged acoustic live music performance by Rick Brantley Meet & Greet and autograph opportunity with Rick Brantley A complimentary glass of Prosecco upon boarding Light bites available during cruise Full bar available during cruise for cash/card purchase About Rick Brantley... Hailing from the musical mecca of Macon, Georgia, and raised in the deep Southern roots of blues music, classic rock n‘ roll and the fire and brimstone hymns of his father’s Southern Baptist church, for Rick Brantley, a life making music was never really a choice. Teenage bar bands gave way to a move to Nashville, TN where he established himself as one of the most in demand young writers on Music Row, with cuts ranging from Meat Loaf to David Nail. An artist and dynamic performer as well as a songwriter, Brantley cut his teeth early and secured a well-earned reputation as a consummate “road dog” touring virtually nonstop all over the world for the next decade, opening for everyone from John Hiatt to Kiefer Sutherland to Zac Brown and Brandy Clark, as well as headlining his own shows from Ontario to Hamburg and back. Now some fifteen years into his career, Brantley has only added to his impressive portfolio, producing acclaimed records with artists like Rob Baird and Justin Halpin, among others and directing music videos in his down time. Living in Brooklyn, New York these days and expanding his musical horizons by producing and music directing Pops Symphony shows in addition to his own touring and recording, even Brantley admits it would be hard to predict his next move.
