In this comprehensive class, students will learn the intricate art of staining porcelain and using colored clay to craft stunning patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces. The class will cover all aspects of the technique from coloring and preparing porcelain, learning how to build a variety of patterns and learning how to form and structure pieces. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate ceramic enthusiasts incorporating a selection of hand-building techniques as well as tips for wheel-throwing with the patterns. All students receive one month of free membership at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course. The Coronado Library was founded in 1890. The original library was built as a classical building that architect Harrison Albright designed in 1909. The building still stands at 640 Orange Avenue located in the heart of the Coronado community. This original building serves as the Spreckels Reading Room within the 40,000 square feet remodeled and expanded library building. The library includes study space at tables and carrels, lounge seating, wireless Internet access, a large public meeting room, conference room, study rooms, separate Children's Library and Teen area, public-access computers, and collections in various subjects and formats. The library also has several large exhibit spaces where we display curated art from the local Coronado and San Diego community and museum-like curated cultural exhibits. This summer, the library will host "Alice: Illustrating Wonderland," a special exhibit celebrating 160 years of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In honor of this milestone, we invite artists of all ages to reimagine the whimsy and wonder of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale. Choose a character or scene that inspires you—from the Mad Hatter’s tea party to Alice’s encounter with the Queen of Hearts—and craft your own two-dimensional masterpiece. Winners will receive prizes, and at least 10 pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit alongside 160 beautifully illustrated editions of the book. Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Sundays, April 13, 20, 27, May 11, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Learn the fascinating and ancient art form of ceramics with Meg, a full time potter, in this 4-week wheel series. Whether you’re a beginner or intending to deepen your relationship, all are welcome to experience the world of clay in this fun and friendly environment. By focusing on techniques to confidently create functional and aesthetic pottery, we will learn creative design, how to throw on the wheel, trimming and glazing! Projects will be ready to pick up 1-2 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. Kids explore Fiber Craft & Wearable Art! Monday through Friday, June 23 – 27 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! Wearable Art Summer Camp is all about exploring fiber arts and the wide world of wearable art! Does your child have an interest in fiber arts and learning macramé, embroidery and creating fun wearable art? Make original pieces of wearable art – lockets, pins, patches and more. This program fuses personal expression with design for daily use. Each week we’ll explore a new kind of wearable object, working with wire, fabric, shrinky dinks and fabric paint. Students will leave with a range of unique pieces and the fabrication skills to create or re-imagine their closet. In this fun week, kids will explore STEAM principles through: *Learning the science of upcycling through lots of traditional–and untraditional–mediums, *Exploring traditional techniques using needle & embroidery floss to create patterns, *Making original pieces of wearable art–lockets, pins, patches and more, *Taking a fun dive into the arts via lots of cool craft mediums, *And, applying conceptual math to macramé, the visual art of knots! This camp is recommended for kids ages 7-12 years. Please join Rebecca Sue Holladay in celebrating Kolibri's new gym/workout space, while also showcasing artworks by talented local artists. "Exercise is a way we express ourselves with our bodies; someone who creates art on canvas is also expressing themselves. To me life is about emotional expression and having a safe space to embody that. So I wanted to join these two elements together to create a space of safety and community." Art includes works from emerging artists in the North County, including 13 recent mixed media paintings by Laurie Batter of Carlsbad. Fresh, delicious appetizers by Savory Moment will be served. The Grand Opening is Saturday, April 19, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Enter from The Poinsettia Station parking lot. Batter, one of the featured artists, says she was always creating art as a child and teenager. She had good fortune to be born into a family who encouraged her creativity, and a grade school program that exposed her to the Masters and a college degree in Art History. After a 40-year hiatus from art while she ran her boutique PR & Marketing firm, and the surprise blessing of the Pandemic, she has renewed her connection to art, creating through multiple mediums and subjects. Her home studio is chock full of colorful paints, and every art supply you could dream about. She actively explores her creativity through classes at Mira Costa College, plus several renowned workshops including Nicholas Wilton’s Art2Life Creative Visioning Program (CVP), Art2Life Spark, and Jenny Nelson. Laurie is a member of AGNC (Artist Group of North County) and the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance. Her work is focused mostly on small stories about humanity that touch the human soul.
