Presented by the Transborder Film Foundation, "Still Moving" brings together filmmakers from both sides of the border and draws an analogy between moving images and migrating bodies. The filmmakers’ works locate migrating bodies, affects, and memories through relics, artifacts, and ruptures in spacetime, traversing mediums and experimental methods. Presenting these films in conversation, "Still Moving" questions the continuity of colonial time and elevates the lives suspended between motion and stillness—the undocumented, the displaced, the disappeared, and the rendered ghostlike in this space we co-dwell. Through this program, TFF calls out violent border regimes, colonial forces, and capitalist extractions that loom around collective experiences of migration across the U.S.-Mexico border. At some times, migrating bodies become an exhibition of the border; at other times, the bodies become the border itself. Speaking in the present continuous tense, "Still Moving" is a call to bear witness and take action: migrating, gathering, resisting and remembering. This screening aims to bring the local community together and cultivate a shared space for reflection, connection, and healing. In this 3-hour spoon carving workshop, learn about carving tools and basic wood carving techniques. Guided by master wood carver Ahmad Khalid Raoufi, explore the initial stages of the process and receive materials and tools to complete the project at home. Admission to this workshop includes light bites and refreshments. Ahmad Khalid Rauofi is a skilled woodcarver who honed his craft in Kabul, Afghanistan. He spent three years in an intensive post-high school woodworking program, where he mastered the traditional techniques of Afghan woodcarving. Ahmad's work reflects the rich cultural heritage of his homeland, blending ancient methods with his artistic vision. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon. With experience as a Navy veteran, creative & executive coach and leadership trainer, he brings a unique blend of structure and soul to his work. Under the umbrella of his own consulting brand Creative Engagement, he fuses professional development and creativity to allow learners & professionals to explore personal narratives with cultural commentary, using music, poetry, and performance as tools for healing and social change. Jorge Mendoza Unveils "Everything is Energy” a Solo Exhibit at the Mandell Weiss Gallery Opening May 2, 2025, running through September 5, 2025 San Diego, CA — "Everything is energy." Born in Mexico City (CDMX) and raised in Santa Cruz, California, Jorge Mendoza is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans borders and mediums. Over the past 12 years, he has lived and worked in San Diego and Tijuana, expanding his artistic practice through screen printing, woodcuts, ceramics, installation, sign painting, murals, photography, art organizing, and curating. As a largely self-taught artist, Jorge embraces exploration, experimentation, and lifelong learning, continuously evolving through travel and new creative experiences. His artistic reach extends from San Francisco to Todos Santos, Baja California, and throughout Mexico City. His latest exhibition delves into the unseen, posing the question: How can we visualize what we cannot see? Through experimental mixed media, and layers of acrylic and oil on canvas, Jorge seeks to capture invisible forces, translating raw energy into tangible, evocative art. The exhibition also features a video installation—a compilation of short films documenting the creation of his murals. Currently, Jorge is in residence in Tijuana, where he hosts creative gatherings, welcoming visitors to experience his work and engage with the vibrant cultural landscape of the city. The "Everything is Energy" opening will be an immersive event featuring an event collaboration with the San Diego Ballet, celebrating its 35th season. She has a master’s degree in painting in Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Art, where she studied at the portrait-genre workshop under the guidance of professors Victor Chaus and Vasily Ganotskiy. Among her many accolades, she has been a curator of the Drawing Studio at the National Union of Artists of Ukraine in Zaporizhzhia. In 2017 she opened a studio of academic painting ‘V-ART’ and taught painting, drawing, plastic anatomy, coloring, and composition at the collegiate level. In 2022, she was evacuated to the USA due to the war in Ukraine. Over the past 2 years she has created around 300 paintings, and takes part in art shows throughout San Diego. “I think it is, like musical notes, that in painting, we do not have borders, we do not have words, and we have Inspiration… Pure Inspiration is indescribable; you can just feel and take it. That’s precisely why I would like to share these paintings, which were created in San Diego County and reflect the light and landscapes that inspire me every day.
