San Diego Symphony musicians share their favorite sing-a-longs, rhymes, dances, and musical games in a series that introduces your youngest listeners to the instruments of the orchestra. Designed for families with children ages 0 – 5, these interactive, fun, and sensory-friendly concerts are 30 minutes. Each Symphony Kids concert will feature fun pre-concert activities. Families are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy hands-on experiences, including crafts and musical instrument exploration in collaboration with ChIMES. These concerts are sensory friendly and feature options like a designated quiet room, sensory kits (upon request), and social stories to support your family's visit.   • We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber.   • In this class designed for beginner to intermediate students, participants will learn step-by-step the fundamentals of wheel throwing, trimming and glazing. It’s the perfect class to get an initial experience of working with clay and make gifts for loved ones. Includes: class clay, firing and glazing. All students receive one month of FREE MEMBERSHIP at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course.   • Create a unique Bandsaw Box! March 22 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Bandsaw boxes are beginner-friendly and have a variety of uses. Once you make one you can make many! In this 7-hour workshop, students will create a box made from a single block of wood using the bandsaw. Students will learn to design and create organic forms on the bandsaw while observing wood grain and learning to make cross cuts and rip cuts. We will cover shop safety and methods for cutting and gluing your box. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish using beeswax. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring your own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.
