The spring series opens on Thursday, March 27, at Scripps Research with a long-anticipated local debut as a leader of acclaimed Cuban composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos, featuring Josh Jones on drums, Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on bass, and Sheldon Brown on sax, clarinet, and flute. Sosa is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. His musical trajectory traces the African diaspora from Cuba to Brazil; from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities; from San Francisco and New York to his current home base in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban origins, Sosa fashions a spirited vision of uncompromising artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. Nominated for seven Grammy awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C., for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. The series continues on Wednesday, April 9, at Scripps Research with the Bill Frisell Trio, featuring Frisell on guitar, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. Recognized as one of America’s most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell has contributed to the work of a staggering array of collaborators, including Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Rickie Lee Jones, Vinicius Cantuária, Marianne Faithfull, John Scofield, Bono, and Brian Eno, to name only a few. This work has established Frisell as one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. The series concludes on Thursday, April 24, at the Athenaeum with the Ben Wendel Quartet, featuring Wendel on saxophone with an all-star rhythm section of Gerald Clayton on piano, Luca Alemanno on bass, and Jonathan Pinson on drums. Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel was born in Vancouver and raised in Los Angeles. Currently living in Brooklyn, he has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer, and producer. Highlights include tours, performances, and/or recordings with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Bill Frisell, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Tigran Hamasyan, Antonio Sanchez, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Linda May Han Oh, Moonchild, Louis Cole, Daedelus, Snoop Dogg, and Prince. Wendel is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated group Kneebody. His 2023 record, All One, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category. This spring, a striking new art installation will transform the arrival court lawn of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE). * (pronounced “Star”) is a 30-foot geometric sculpture, an awe-inspiring piece that blends mathematical precision with artistic vision. By day, the structure’s aluminum spikes and fabric sails interact with the shifting light, creating an elegant yet imposing presence. By night, 30 individually programmable LED floodlights illuminate the sails, transforming the sculpture into a glowing beacon visible from afar. "*(Star)" is the latest work from Glass House Arts, an Escondido-based artist collective known for large-scale, immersive sculptures that invite curiosity and connection. Originally designed for Burning Man, this installation celebrates its roots by returning to the city where it was built—Escondido. The public will have the opportunity to engage with the work, not just as spectators, but as part of a growing community of makers and artists. Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist who cares deeply about water and believes in the power of public art. Mattingly founded "Swale", an edible landscape on a public barge in New York City. Recent public art projects include "Limnal Lacrimosa" in Glacier National Park in Montana; "Public Water" with +More Art in New York; "Vanishing Point" with Metal Southend and "Focal Point Gallery" in the UK. Mattingly has exhibited sculpture and photography at the Cuenca, Istanbul, and Havana Biennials; Storm King Art Center in New York; the International Center of Photography in New York; the Seoul Art Center; the Brooklyn Museum in New York; and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. She has received grants from the James L. Knight Foundation, the Harpo Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Her work has been featured in Aperture, Art in America, Sculpture, The New York Times, Le Monde, and on Art21, and included in such publications as Nature – part of the Whitechapel/MIT Press Documents of Contemporary Art series– and Henry Sayre’s A World of Art (8th edition), published by Pearson Education, Inc. In 2022, a monograph of her work, What Happens After, was published by the Anchorage Museum and Hirmer Verlag. Co-sponsored by the Nature, Space and Politics working group of the UCSD International Institute, this lecture is introduced and moderated by Dr. Pinar Yoldas, an infradisciplinary designer/artist/researcher and Associate Professor and head of the Speculative Design Area in the Department of Visual Arts. Join us at the beautiful Water Conservation Garden to learn how to combat these concerns, whether in your small backyard or larger farm or ranch. Solana Center Educator Deanna Milton and guest speaker Craig Kolodge, PhD, Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control will explore effective compost application as a means of watershed protection through a case study of the manure composting demonstration site at Ramona’s International Equestrian Center. This workshop will conclude with a tour of the Water Conservation Garden’s watershed protection features. Panelist Craig Kolodge, Ph.D., is the former academic advisor, field plant pathologist and county director for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in Santa Clara County. He currently serves as the Business Development and Sustainability Manager for San Pasqual Valley Soils. Craig is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and expert in the use of compost-based Sustainable Management Practices (SMPs) for stormwater management and industrial pollution management (Trainer of Record for Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner – QISP statewide program).
