The Old Globe invites friends and families from San Diego and beyond to celebrate the theatre’s longest resident playwright, William Shakespeare, with the Globe’s annual AXIS Event Happy Birthday, Mr. Shakespeare! on Saturday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. The Bard’s birthday—his 461st!—is an exciting and festive occasion to celebrate his countless contributions to arts and culture around the world. The festivities will be hosted by our very own Arts Engagement Producer Eric Hagen and Natasha Harris and will include Shakespearean monologues and scenes performed by M.F.A. students from The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, a fight choreography demonstration and workshop led by Ben Cole, a curated vinyl DJ set from Stevie Ortega accompanied with live instrumentals, an interactive performance and tap dance workshop by DrumatiX, and a crafts station for kids of all ages to enjoy. Plus, all attendees are invited to join in the “Happy Birthday” sing-along celebration with cupcakes. This event is free and open to everyone who wishes to attend. Skyrie is an electrifying contemporary Celtic music trio renowned for their dynamic performances and innovative sound. Their music blends traditional Scottish and Irish tunes, poignant original songs, tunes, and soundscapes with modern influences from rock to funk. The performance includes a fusion of M A L U’s violin sounds mixed with electronica; a call for equity, projections of Hugo Crosthwaite’s visual art with visual director Kijohote; a call for freedom from discrimination, Pita Zapot’s contemporary dance; a call for protection under law and the whispering voice of a poet, Zale; a call for equal rights. UNID@S will open in the silo courtyard with a multi-instrumentalist Maki & Delion performing saxophone, clarinet and voice, a second opener in the silo room by Medical Grade performing a hardcore-analog set and will close in the silo courtyard with Katja, a violist with electronica. Discover the artistic synergy of San Diego artists Susie Zol and Denise Cerro in their latest exhibition, "2 Artists 2 Mediums". This show features original ceramics pieces and paintings, showcasing their shared journey and creative evolution. Susie transforms her abstracted portraits into ceramics, while Denise reimagines her mixed media paintings with clay and glazes. Susie and Denise have painted together in several artist studios in San Diego through the years, and are currently members of the F1VEart Studio & Gallery as well as the Creative Academy where they create ceramic works, both in the Arts District of Liberty Station. These two artist simultaneously turned their creative interest towards clay and ceramics and rather than turning from painting on canvas, they each have found their own way of combining the two mediums.
