  • The Maritime Museum of San Diego is thrilled to announce that the restored Western Flyer, the historic fishing vessel used by John Steinbeck during his 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition, will be available for public tours on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This exclusive one-day event commemorates the 85th anniversary of Steinbeck and Ricketts' journey, which significantly influenced modern ecological thought and conservation efforts. Visitors can explore the 77-foot sardine seiner as part of the museum's general admission, delving into its rich history and legacy. Published in 1941, "Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research" chronicled the historic voyage, leaving a profound impact on both the scientific and literary worlds. The book was among the first public calls for conservation in the region and played a key role in raising awareness about the ecological significance of the Gulf of California. Over the decades, it has inspired countless students to pursue careers in marine and field biology. While the book endured, the boat itself disappeared into obscurity for decades. She reappeared 20 years ago, but then sank twice, and was given up for dead, destined to be chain sawed into a tourist attraction in Salinas, California. However, thanks to the efforts of the Western Flyer Foundation, the boat has undergone a meticulous restoration. Maritime Museum of San Diego on Facebook / Instagram
  • Compost, mulch, cover cropping, and hedgerows all benefit soil. They increase soil biodiversity and nutrient levels, yielding healthier and more fertile crops. They protect soil structure by aiding in water retention, runoff prevention, and erosion protection. These natural and sustainable practices save costs in the long run through decreased water use and a reduced need for purchased additives. Attendees must pre-register. These practices are covered under the California Department of Food And Agriculture’s Healthy Soils Program Incentives grant, which provides funding to farmers to improve the health of their soils. In this webinar, we will cover: * An introduction to the Healthy Soils Program * The benefits, steps, and options for each of the four practices * Compost * Mulch * Cover crop * Hedgerows * Required documentation steps for the Healthy Soils Program * Outlook for next HSP grant cycles Thank you to our sponsors, the California Department of Food And Agriculture and California Climate Investments. • Over the past decade, artist Math Bass has developed a lexicon of symbols in the series Newz!—letters, bodily forms, architectural fragments, animals, bones—arranged in a variety of scores, each symbol an empty space of meaning, filled in by the context in which it finds itself. Repetition of these symbols, rather than codifying them into one solid signification, exposes the difference at the heart of each iteration; there is always a gap in meaning, something unnamable left out of and left over in the viewer’s reading—a jouissance. It is this gap in the symbolic where Lee Edelman states queerness lies—not as an easily categorized liberal identity but as a process of unmaking and undoing that leaves (gendered) subjectivity as we know it in question. That these symbols are familiar only heightens our unsettling; the negative space of these compositions, a major player in Bass’s practice, adds further to the gap.
