Learn to create these stunning pieces of art that intertwine Japanese culture and the changing of the seasons. By end of the semester, you will have learned to design beautiful and professional looking arrangements for both everyday and special occasions. Heroes and Monsters (Ages 6 – 7) July 7 – 11, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. What would your artful superpower be? Get ready to team up with your friends and MCASD educators in an awesome showdown for the fate of the museum–an art collision between Heroes and Monsters. Spend the week designing your own Hero and Monster inspired by the Museum's collection: Learn how to use art for good by developing your own art superpowers. Create a persona by dawning masks and capes influenced by Nick Cave. Use John Baldessari's conceptual powers to fight "Boring Art." Schedule Day 1: Start the week by imagining your superhero, or good-monster alter-ego, and its artful superpowers! Then, create your helmet. Day 2: Make your shield and cape and create dice to guide your way. All are invited to join us at Sparks Gallery at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday June 29 for a casual coffee conversation with Southern California mixed-media artist and educator, Kathleen Kane-Murrell and explore her latest exhibition, "Chasing Shadows." Kathleen is a charm of the Californian art world and has dedicated herself to education and the cultivation of art, establishing the award- winning children’s art program, Fine Artists™. She will be discussing her journey of creation and inspirations, particularly for her exhibition "Chasing Shadows" which is showing at Sparks Gallery in the Gaslamp District until July 6. Inspired by a childhood memory of Peter Pan, Kathleen Kane-Murrell’s "Chasing Shadows" explores the ephemeral nature of light and form. Using suspended plexiglass, she creates layered, shifting compositions where shadows become an integral part of the artwork—always present yet often overlooked. In a fast-paced world that demands quick judgments, Kane-Murrell invites viewers to slow down, engage in deep looking, and discover the quiet beauty in the fleeting.
