Diplomats Discuss Growing Populism in Latin America

Tom Fudge: Leaders in Europe and the Middle East have harshly criticized President Bush's Iraq policy.

In Latin America, there is a small but growing coalition of leftist leaders who have become plainly anti-American. Nothing has changed in Cuba, of course. In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez has built his reputation on thumbing his nose at the U.S.

Bolivia, the poorest country in South America, now has a president who is a strong ally of Chavez and Castro. Most recently, Nicaragua elected Sandinista Daniel Ortega as its new leader. Ortega, of course, was the Marxist leader who was vilified by the Reagan administration two decades ago.
