Hundreds of Local Teachers Still Await Assignment

More than 400 new San Diego school teachers will face their first batch of students this year. However some still don't know where they'll report when class begins. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

A number of new teachers have not yet been assigned to a school or class just yet. District officials say that's not unusual. In fact, they say that's the reality many teachers face these days.

School officials say many first-year teachers aren't placed at the start of the school year because some campuses need more teachers than others based on a shift in student enrollment.

Anne Harlan admits it’s unsettling not to have her own teaching space.

Harlan : For me it's the fear of the unknown. I haven't been placed yet, so I don't know what school I want to go to or what subject I'm going to teach. So it’s not knowing right now.

Harlan expects to teach a foreign language at an elementary school. District officials say most teachers will be placed after the first few weeks of school.
