Chula Vista Mayor Urges Calm Towards Antsy Bay Front Developer

Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox urged labor leaders to make peace with a Tennessee developer today. Gaylord Entertainment is threatening to withdraw its plans for a billion-dollar development on Chula Vista's bay front because of union demands. KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare has more.

The mayor stood in an empty dirt parking lot across from Chula Vista's bay front. She waved a sheet with flight schedules from San Diego to Tennessee.

Then she pleaded with labor leaders to hop on the next plane and strike a deal with Gaylord Entertainment.

Cox : Get this deal done. It's incredibly important not only for the people of Chula Vista, but it's incredibly important for the people of San Diego County and for people who choose to work and choose to visit here.

Gaylord wants to build a billion-dollar hotel and convention center at the bay front.

Union leaders want the company to sign a deal that would require it to only hire union workers.

Company officials say they will offer union-level wages and benefits to the 6,500 workers they expect to hire. But they will not sign any agreement with unions.
