Immigrant Rights Consortium to Focus on Education, Advocation

25 legal, faith, and labor groups in San Diego County have joined forces to form the Immigrants Rights Consortium. The group aims to provide support for immigrants and educate people about the immigration debate. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Immigration Consortium Chairwoman Andrea Guerrero says the groups have joined forces because the immigration reform issue is vital to San Diego.

Guerrero : It effects virtually everyone in the county in one form or another. And we want to inform the debate and be a part of the debate on a countywide basis in a way that no single organization could be.

Guerrero says the consortium has four goals that include combating anti-immigrant activity, educating immigrants about their rights, and advocating for immigration reform.

The group has launched a website to advise immigrants of their rights. The site also keeps tabs on proposed immigration legislation and links to local resources for immigrants.

Guerrero says any immigration reform legislation must reunite families and provide a path to citizenship for people who are here illegally.
