League of Women Voters has New Strategy to Lure More Voters

The 87-year-old League of Women Voters is heading into the 2008 election year with a new strategy to get more people -- particularly new citizens -- to vote. Jenny O’Mara reports.

With three elections next year, the League of Women Voters is preparing to print millions of its Easy Voter Guides. For the February primary they’re preparing to distribute about one million of the free guides that give quick explanations on the issues and candidates. They’re largely targeted to English language learners. State League President Janis Hirohama says this year they’re partnering with the state Department of Moter Vehicles and Spanish language media to reach a wider audience.

Hirohama: We want to reach out and particularly to areas in the Central Valley that have been somewhat underserved, widely spread out communities, a lot of Spanish language speakers.”

Hirohama says posters at the DMV -- where one can also register to vote -- will direct people to the League’s materials which are also translated into several languages.
