Holiday Shopping 101

Tom Fudge: Christmas is just around the corner. In fact, in recent years we've been spotting that corner from quite a ways further up the block. Like the football season, the holiday shopping season seems to get longer and longer. But we do have some enduring benchmarks that give us a good idea of how well the season may go. One of them is Black Friday , the day after Thanksgiving.

It's a myth that Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. That day comes a lot closer to Christmas. But Black Friday is considered, in theory at least, to be the big shopping day when retailers go into the black and start making a profit. Hence, the expression "Black" Friday. According to some reports, there was good news and bad news about Black Friday this year. The good news was that a lot of people went to the store. The bad news, for retailers anyhow, is that they didn't spend much money.
