Tom Fudge : The most contentious political contest of 2008 on the San Diego landscape was the race for City Attorney. It pitted incumbent Mike Aguirre against challenger Judge Jan Goldsmith. Aguirre has developed a reputation has an opinionated and activist city attorney. He fought many battles with the Mayor and Council. In the end, Aguirre's ability to make enemies outweighed his appeal to the critics of city hall, and he lost his bid for re-election.
In August KPBS aired a debate between Goldsmith and Aguirre. In this excerpt from it, we hear the response after moderator Gloria Penner asks the candidates where it's possible to represent the people of San Diego, while also looking out for the interests of city hall, and the city's political establishment.
