Schwarzenegger Banking on Win for Indian Gambling Measures

A yes vote on propositions 94 through 97 would affirm the deals Governor Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers struck last year with four wealthy Southern California Indian tribes.

A yes vote on propositions 94 through 97 would affirm the deals Governor Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers struck last year with four wealthy Southern California Indian tribes.

A no vote would repeal the compacts.

The deals would boost the number of slot machines in California by almost 30 percent. In return for the expansion, the four tribes would share a larger portion of their winnings with the cash-strapped state.

Schwarzenegger assumes the four tribes would add almost 7,000 slot machines within six months and that all 17,000 slots allowed under the compacts will be up and running within about a year. The tribes, however, have cautioned they may have to wait until the economy improves to complete the expansions.

The opposition says the deals are unfair to low-paid workers, poor tribes and taxpayers.
