A group of Tijuana grandmothers has written a prayer for peace. They're asking people on both sides of the border to say it together Friday evening to help restore tranquility in Tijuana. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Lidia de Aceves has lived in Tijuana for more than forty years.
Aceves says life in the city has completely changed. She says when her children were small and they'd be invited to a birthday party, she'd put them in the car, buy a present and drop them off.
But Aceves says life is not that simple for her daughters and grandkids. She says now you have to worry -- whose house is it? Where do they live? How do they live?
Aceves says as women and grandmothers what they can do is have faith.
Their prayer asks God to have mercy on Tijuana and view the city’s law enforcement officials with kindness.
Aceves has passed out thousands of fliers with the prayer on it and thousands of candles.
She's asking people to recite the prayer and light their candle Friday at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, local officials have launched an aggressive tourism campaign to improve the city’s image.
