Developers Lead the Pack in San Diego Campaign Contributions

An analysis of campaign contributions made last year to candidates running for San Diego city office shows developers leading the pack. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The figures only apply to campaign contributions made before December 31 last year, before several candidates decided to run for mayor, city attorney or city council.

The Center on Policy Initiatives , a think tank that studies issues affecting working San Diegans, calculates just over $1 million had already been contributed to the six races.

Spokesperson Susan Duerksen says $228,000 -- over 20 percent of all the campaign contributions -- came from developers, realtors and the construction industry.

Duerksen: This kind of data really opens out eyes to who are the big players in San Diego politics and who has the biggest stake. The approval of development and land use decisions is one of the most important powers that our city council and the mayor have. They get to decide what gets built in this town.

District 2, which includes downtown San Diego, is not on the ballot this year. District 5, which runs from Sorrento Mesa north to Carmel Mountain Ranch, is the district which has attracted most developer dollars so far.

According to the study, Mayor Jerry Sanders attracted $90,000 from developers last year. Mayoral candidate Steve Francis didn’t take any money from developers, but that's because the multi-millionaire is financing his own campaign.
