Laid Off California Teachers Courted By Other States

Other states are trying to capitalize on the teacher layoffs here in California.

That is according to teachers' unions and the state schools chief who say they are seeing ads and job fairs trying to lure laid off teachers to places like Texas and Virginia.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell says Governor Schwarzenegger's budget that's resulted in pink slips for teachers is to blame.

O'Connell:  "Our teaching ranks have declined recently as a result of the Governor's last several budgets and clearly this Governor is hurting our teaching profession."

O'Connell estimates some 24 thousand teachers, administrators and staff have received preliminary layoff notices.

Another round of notices will go out May 15th.

Schwarzenegger has said he does not like cutting education and wants budget reforms to avoid such cuts in the future.
