California voters have weighed in on 12 propositions, several of which featured multimillion dollar campaigns and would have long-lasting consequences for state taxpayers.

Writing a ban on gay marriage into the state Constitution has sparked the most controversy. Early returns show the measure passing by 54 percent.

Proposition 4 is another divisive social issue. It would require doctors to notify parents or guardians when minors seek an abortion. It is trailing narrowly in early returns.

Two alternative energy initiatives also are trailing.

Proposition 2, the Standards for Confining Farm Animals Act, is ahead with 62 percent of the vote in early returns.
