Navy Cancels Private Outreach

The Navy has canceled invitations to private meetings with Admiral Len Hering  to discuss the proposed Navy Broadway Complex development. Now, the Navy   denies those meetings were ever scheduled. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The Navy announced future dates for public hearings on the Navy Broadway Complex last week. But  at the same time, a public relations firm engaged by the Navy sent out emails to handpicked individuals, inviting them to private meetings with the Admiral on different dates.

Captain Matt Brown now says those  individuals have been emailed again, with a correction: they are invited to the public hearings only.

Brown: The private meetings were never scheduled, there was no intention to hold private meetings with Admiral Hering but rather to hold public meetings.

The Navy’s new environmental assessment of the Navy Broadway Complex is now out.

The 670 page report concludes the environmental impacts have not changed significantly since the agreement to redevelop the site was signed with the city in 1992.
