Mayor Says Bersin's New Job Good for SD

San Diego Mayor's says the choice of local resident Alan Bersin as the country's new Border Czar could benefit the city. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

Mayor Jerry Sanders says he thinks the idea of having a Border Czar is a good one no matter who's in the position. But he says Bersin will bring to the job an understanding of how San Diego's impacted by border issues.

"Alan I've known for a long time. When I was Chief of Police he was the US Attorney. And we've worked closely ever since on border issues, on issues that effect the health and safety of San Diegans. So I think Alan's going to be an incredible choice for that," he says.

Sanders says he's happy with how San Diego's being treated as the federal government handles border security. Sanders has recently appeared on cable news channels talking about border issues. He says he expects Bersin will be responsive to local input when creating federal policies that effect the border.
