No Fines Yet For Water Wasting

A month into mandatory conservation, San Diego’s water department is receiving hundreds of calls to its water waste hotline. But KPBS reporter Katie Orr says no one has been fined yet.

In the month of June, the water department received nearly 700 calls. Before watering restrictions were implemented, the department got about 80 calls a month. But Water Resources Manager Luis Generoso says no one has received a fine yet. He says the department is still trying to let people know about the restrictions.

“We definitely want to make sure that we talk to the customer before we do any fines. And we aren’t at that stage yet where we’re imposing any fines,” he says.

Generoso says it usually takes about two weeks to follow up on a complaint. He says there have only been a few cases when someone’s called to complain about a case again. He says this weekend an airplane banner will be flying over area beaches with the department’s conversation slogan on it to help remind people not to waste water.
