UC San Diego Takes a Nap

You'll catch a lot of students sleeping at the Price Center ballroom on the U-C-San Diego campus today. KPBS Reporter Tom Fudge reports on the "Nap-In."

The beginning of Daylight Saving Time has cut short the sleep of a lot of us. And a UC San Diego professor thinks that's a good reason to hold a Nap In. Students are invited to take nap this afternoon at the Price Center. The event seeks to raise awareness of napping, as a way to achieve better physical and psychological health. Sara Mednick is a professor of psychology and author of a book about napping. She says she expects a lot of students to show up and nod off.

"People are already sleeping all over campus. We're actually giving out little nap kits that have eye shades and ear plugs and also a nap map, that has all the different areas that student call hot napping areas. Usually it's the library obviously," says Mednick.

Mednick says it's obvious to her that letting workers take short naps, during the day, can increase their productivity. Tom Fudge, KPBS News.
