The Future is Green

Is it easy being green? We'll explore how companies are adopting environmentally-friendly business practices, making green products and offering green services, and how consumers are responding to the greening trend.

Maureen Cavanaugh: We've all known for quite some time that being kind to the environment was a worthy endeavor. It was the right to do, it made us feel good, and it was a good thing to teach your kids. But, nobody seriously thought your could make any money at it, until now.

Well-established corporations are introducing green-product lines. There are green symbols popping up on well-known appliances and products. But even more intriguing is a whole new generation of "green businesses" are starting to enter the marketplace. These companies do familiar things in a different way. Their catchwords are sustainability, non-toxic, and a reduced carbon-footprint. And it seems that the marketplace is finally ready.

The Cone Consumer Environmental Survey recently found that even during this economic recession, 70 percent of Americans are paying attention to what companies are doing environmentally.

Dear Maureen,

First I want to commend you for including a discussion on the benefits, momentum and possibilities of going green in this morning's These Days session. I received a call from a colleague during the session that I needed to turn on the radio right away as they were discussing green homes.
My name is Jennifer Owens and I manage residential education for the U.S. Green Building Council. The USGBC is a national non-profit that has been working to have a positive impact on our built environment for 15 years. Historically based in Washinton DC, we now have a residentially-focused office right here in San Diego where I am located.
I want to extend our support and resources to your program and the KPBS station at large.
If I had been able to join the conversation I would have advocated individuals to take advantage of a free public resource: REGREEN Program. REGREEN Program offers a set of residential remodeling guidelines as well as education to support them. The guidelines are free to download at www.regreenprogram.org and serve as a tool to educate both consumers and building industry professionals on green considerations and strategies that can and should be applied to our existing housing stock.

Thanks for the informative discussion, I just wished you had time to take more calls from listeners. As a staff photographer for www.sdgreenlife.com ( an online GREEN magazine focuses on san diego businesses,) I am amazed on a daily basis of the growing number of green businesses At the magazine we try to feature the ones that are truly green and help local businesses get exposure.

Kudos for covering this topic. I'd like to suggest a series about environmental issues produced by PBS called "Design e2 - The Economies of Being Environmentally Conscious." KPBS TV has aired episodes in the past, but the series is ongoing.

As I was listening to this episode I kept hearing about businesses that were "green". What I do not like is that the host (Maureen Cavanaugh) did nothing to play the devils advocate and call out people to prove that they were in fact "green". Its unfortunate that Maureen does not push the guests and the callers, even if she believes in them, to get two sides of the story. Being "green" is the new sell word that every business wants to use to sell their product. We need to push for truth regarding being green and make sure we don't allow untrustworthy and unethical businesses and people to dupe us into buying from them because they call themselves "green".

Green is the future, past, and present, even when we didn't hear about it in our everyday life. The key to success for the green revolution is personal responsibility. It is our responsibility as consumers, neighbors, and inhabitants of this amazing planet to be mindful of our decisions. We must make real change or continue to suffer more and more of the consequences of unsustainable industrial, technological, sociological growth. In the recent shift toward "green" standards as a consumer based society we have seen a move toward fact based improvements. The last century of growth in our economy was unsustainable because it was not based on facts. The prime example is the financial markets being deregulated to the degree that greed ruled and left the majority with gaping wholes in there financial profiles. The growth in the industrial, technology, and agricultural gains of the last 100 years were done without taking all of the true costs of growth into consideration. This left the environment and our health to pay for the hidden costs. Not to mention the inherent instability of markets based on building our energy infrastructure around a limited supply of oil. We must change or perish with all of the hegemonic world powers of the past. Do your part and choose wisely research and educate yourself before you pay for a service or a product to determine if it is part of a sustainable growth model.
