San Diego City Council voted 5-to-2 today to approve another water rate increase. It’s the sixth rate hike in the last two years.

Unlike other recent water rate increases, city officials said this was simply passing along cost hikes from the County Water Authority.

Councilman Todd Gloria summed up his reluctant support of the rate hike. “We have to pay this $30 million,” he said. “We just have to figure out a way to do it. And it’s fair to say that if we don’t do this, taxpayers of this city will have to pay for it one way or the other.”

If the city had taken the $30 million out of the department’s reserve fund, that would have solved the problem for only one year. City officials said using the reserve fund would also have delayed state mandated pipe upgrades and affected the department’s ability to borrow in the future.

When the City of Oceanside balked at raising water rates last month, it got a warning letter from a credit rating agency.

Water rates for an average family in San Diego will go up more than $4 a month.

The city clerk received 14,000 protest forms from residents. Some residents told the city council they had walked door to door to collect the protest forms. However, under the provisions of Proposition 218, the city would have had to receive more than 135,000 protest forms to reject the increase.

Several residents objected to having to pay for treated water that contains fluoride. City Water Department Chief Jim Barrett said the city buys most of its water untreated, and then treats most of that water without fluoride. However, he said the city is about 18 months away from completing installation of new equipment which will include fluoride.

It is most unfortunate that rates are being increased to add fluoride to drinking water considering that it is ineffective for teeth and dangerous to health.
When the fertilitzer companies, and others, clean their smokestacks, they bag the waste fluoride chemical, ( Hydrofluorosilicic Acid), which contains lead, mercury, arsenic, etc. and sell it to communities to add to our water systems. The Government tries to convince us that it does not harm us if it is diluted enough. It is a hoax on the public. Follow the money!
Those promoting fluoridation simply refuse to read the current research showing it is ineffective and dangerous to health. Go to (www.fluoridealert.org) and read several scientific articles.
Read the letter from Dr. Hardy Limeback ( DDS, PhD Biochemistry) --- Head, Preventive Dentistry, University of Toronto entitled "Why I am now officially opposed to adding fluoride to drinking water"
He was the principal research advisor to the Canadian Dental Asociation for over 10 years in promoting fluoridation. His letter is an apology to other dentists and the public.
Dr. Limeback includes over 140 Research studies, including:
Increased risk of bone cancer -- 13 studies
Lead, arsenic, radium contaminants causing toxic water -- 10 studies
Link with fluoride and other cancer -- 12
Fluoride causes birth defects -- 5
Fluoride affects the immune systems -- 12
Fluoride is neurotoxic (brain, nerves, lowering IQ) -- 11
Etc.
Also see the petition signed by over 2600 professionals opposing fluoridation.

While referring to a waste of tax money, consider the following.
Fluoridation is insanely inefficient with 99.5% of fluoridated water going down the drain in toilets, showers, dishwashers, washing machines, etc. thereby wasting 99.5% of the chemical cost. People only drink 0.5% of the water they use, and less than half of this 0.5% would be drunk by young children, the supposed target of this chemical.

For example, for every $1000 of fluoride chemical added to water, $995 would be directly wasted down the drain, $5 would be consumed in water by the people, and less than $2.50 would be consumed by children. Can you think of a more wasteful government program?

A plan to give away fluoride tablets free to whoever wants them would be much, much cheaper. Then the rest of us would not be drugged against our will.

Fluoride is more toxic then lead and causes motted teeth, obesity, arthritus and a docile mind. Why do they tell you to call a poison control center if you swallow more than a pea sized amount. That is the same amount in 10 oz. of fluoridated water. It is straight from the scrubbers of the aluminum and phosphate industry. They would have to pay a huge amount to dump it but you will pay them for it. The new science on fluoride is alarming. It is the new abestos, lead, mercury or DDT. It is also mass medication which is wrong. There is much information on the internet, read it or consult a toxicoligist, but educate yourself on this. Click this link to watch a short video of Dr. Bill Osmunson ,a dentist of 30 years with a masters in public health explain why. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ys9q1cvKGk Over 1,500 scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees at EPA Headquarters in the USA stated : “Recent, peer-reviewed toxicity data, require an immediate halt to the use of the nation’s drinking water reservoirs as disposal sites for the toxic waste of the phosphate fertilizer industry. 23 published studies indicate an association between moderate to high exposure to fluoride and lowered IQ in children (easy to achieve for a infant: see them at www.FluorideAlert.org/brain ) For a city that fluoridates- to not know the risk is negligence, and if they fail to warn water customers of the health risk-that is battery, please pass this on and see the website: www.fluoridealert.org/50-reasons.htm. Protect infants, they are harmed the most. Read, print and post the pdf at: http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/infant/. Another reason we don`t need fluoride in water is that it is in food from processing it with fluoridated water. See what happens when you use fluoridated water to process food------> Fluoride contaiminated food: www.poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/f-_i... The San Diego City Council caved to special interest groups and voted, and against their own better judgment, to add unnecessary fluoride chemicals into San Diego's water supply, fully knowing their constituents have voted against it repeatedly.

Now the people of San Diego are being forced to pay for their City Council's bad decision. It all stinks to me - no matter where the funds come from - they originate in tax payers pockets.

What kind of long term plan is in place here? Six rate hikes in two years seems significant. Is there another way to handle this?
