— An estimated 4,206 incoming freshmen and 2,943 transfer students are expected to attend UC San Diego in the upcoming fall quarter, the university announced today.

The number of transfer students who have accepted an offer to attend UCSD is up 33 percent, compared to fall of 2009, according to UCSD. The number of new freshmen is up 4.9 percent.

Incoming freshmen had a high school grade point average of 3.97, according to UCSD. Transfer students entering UCSD had an average college GPA of 3.43.

"We are pleased to welcome such a high-caliber student body,'' UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said. "UC San Diego continues to enhance our efforts to recruit and admit well-qualified and diverse students to ensure access to UC San Diego's world-class educational opportunities.''

According to UCSD, a total of 729 freshmen from under-represented groups are expected to attend the university in the fall, up 23 percent from the fall of 2009. The under-represented category includes black, Mexican American, Latino and Native American students, according to UCSD.
