Apartment Building Recycling Bill Goes to Governor

The California legislature has approved a bill that would require owners of apartment buildings to offer their tenants recycling services.

The bill’s author is Democratic Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield, who met with apartment associations to resolve their concerns.

“We worked on a very good compromise,” said Blumenfield. “A bill that’s strong, but it allows off-ramps for apartment owners who may have either a financial hardship or don’t have the bin space – the two critical areas that they were concerned with.”

The measure would apply to buildings with five or more units. It requires landlords to provide the recycling services – but does not put landlords at fault if tenants don’t recycle.

Republicans opposed the bill, which passed the Assembly today by a 42-to-24 vote. It now moves to the governor’s desk.
