Year-Round Lifeguards To Return To Blacks Beach

Year-Round Lifeguards To Return To Blacks Beach
A popular surf spot could be getting its year-round lifeguards back. The patrols were stripped away last year.

La Jolla’s Blacks Beach can only be reached by climbing down steep cliffs. Its big surf and strong currents attract experienced surfers, and its seclusion is favorable for naturalists.

Last year’s bare budget forced the city to cut back on lifeguard patrols during the winter months at Blacks. San Diego City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner said UC San Diego offered to restore the funding to keep the beach safe.

“It’s used by UCSD faculty and staff and it is a remote area that is not easily serviced by the lifeguards so it was originally cut.”

If approved by the city council, two lifeguards will patrol the beach daily. The number will be increased to six for UCSD’s spring break and during the summer months.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
