Former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, 42, was among the four Americans killed Tuesday during an attack on the U.S. embassy in Libya.
Doherty, a Massachusetts native, lived in Encinitas, according to San Diego television station FOX 5 News.
Doherty's sister, Katie Quigley, told the Boston Globe:
“He was on security detail and he was protecting the ambassador and also helping the wounded’’ when he was killed.
Quigley told the Globe her brother spent seven years as a Navy SEAL. He left the Navy four years ago to work for a private security company.
Doherty also worked for SEALFIT gym in Encinitas as a trainer. According to his online bio, Doherty enjoyed flying planes and was a triathlete:
An accomplished pilot, Glen has his multi-engine, commercial, and instrument flight ratings. He holds a B.S. in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a minor in aviation safety.
A former avid triathlete, Glen raced all distances—sprints to Ironman—including Ironman Canada in 2004, before retiring from the sport and taking up CrossFit and SEAlFIT.
