We've rounded up our top picks for what's happening this weekend, and there's a little bit of everything, from stargazing to ambient music to a history-infused happy hour.
Signaling the start of summer are the best kinds of events: the ones that take place outdoors. Gazin' with the Experts is a monthly stargazing experience at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. San Diegans are invited to stargaze with experts at dusk on the first Wednesday of the month. Head to the Fleet this Wednesday, July 3, for an outdoor experience you won't soon forget.
Another great summer activity is watching movies outdoors, and that's exactly what's happening at the USS Midway Museum this Wednesday, July 3, when they'll screen Escape from Planet Earth as part of Summer Movies in the Park.
Los Angeles-based musician Will Wiesenfeld is the one and only man behind Baths, his ambient bedroom project that has been critically acclaimed since the start. On his second album, Obsidian, his lyrics tackle dark subject matter like death and suicide. Sonically, however, he layers lush sounds that will make you almost forget the dark material. Wiesenfeld will perform Thursday, June 27 at The Casbah.
The San Diego History Center kicked off its Bottled & Kegged exhibition in April, featuring a comprehensive overview of San Diego's history of craft beer culture. The exhibition is still going strong, and last month, the center started History Happy Hours, each one featuring a different brewery. At the happy hour you can not only check out the exhibition but you can also taste brews from the featured brewer and have a one-on-one chat should beer brewing really pique your interest. There are also light appetizers and you get to keep a commemorative glass. This month's happy hour features Amplified Ale Works and bites from Papa Luna's Empenadas.
Big Business is a metal band hailing from Seattle that features members of The Melvins. The band has played together since 2005 and has added and subtracted members, taken breaks and worked on other projects in the meantime. They keep ending up back together, but since the project is so fluid, they have a lot of fun with it. They're touring all summer and will make a stop in San Diego on Friday, June 28 at The Soda Bar in City Heights.
