The Senate has approved a controversial measure that would suspend most standardized testing in California schools as the state transitions to the new nationwide “common core” curriculum. It’s supported by Governor Jerry Brown but strongly opposed by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. The bill goes back to the Assembly for a final vote.
Lawmakers sent a ban on using lead ammunition in hunting to the governor. They also gave final approval to a measure that would allow trained volunteers to administer epinephrine auto-injectors known as Epi-Pens to children or adults who suffer potentially fatal allergic reactions.
And lawmakers are sending voters a constitutional amendment that would require local governments to abide by California public records and open meetings laws without state reimbursement. That’ll be on the ballot next June.
