San Diego Families Honor Victims Of Domestic Violence
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Advocates marked the beginning of the month with a ceremony honoring those who died last year.

Friends and families met Thursday at Civic Center Plaza to honor San Diego victims of abuse who died in 2014 as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Leonor Castillo was run over by her ex-husband in 2014. She was one of 14 victims of domestic violence who died at the hands of their abuser in San Diego County last year.

Castillo's friend, Tania Calvillo, honored her at a ceremony downtown. Nearly a year after her friends’ death, she is starting to have some insight for people in the same situation.

“There is hope for a better future,” Calvillo said. “They don’t have to stay in the relationship where they have been hurt."

Four deaths remain under investigation from 2014. The 14 deaths already surpass the nine deaths in 2013. The event was organized by the San Diego Domestic Violence Council. Organizers said there were 16,897 incidents of domestic violence reported to local police last year.
