A new Field Poll shows a majority of Californians would not vote to re-elect Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in part because he called next week's special election. The governor was in San Diego Thursday to rally support for one of the measures in that election. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.

Schwarzenegger stopped by a downtown San Diego hotel to speak in favor of Proposition 74. As teachers, union leaders, and school board members protested outside, the governor urged a yes vote on the measure that would lengthen the amount of time teachers must be on the job before they get tenure, from two years to five years.

I say, go for it, vote yes on Proposition 74, make the changes, let's protect the children, and let's make sure that we have the best teachers there.

Schwarzenegger says the initiative would make it easier for districts to get rid of bad teachers. But critics say it would instead take away due process rights for teachers and make it too easy to fire them. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS news.
