San Diego Airport Authority's Public Working Groups heard numerous reasons Wednesday why it would be impossible to site a new airport on a military base like North Island or Miramar. But they did not give up on studying joint use as a possibility. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Even mentioning the possibility of putting a new airport on a military base was taboo till after the Base Closure List was confirmed and San Diego bases were spared. Now the topic of joint - use is on the table again, The Airport Public Working Group asked marine representative Colonel Gregory Goodman whether Miramar will still be a military base in 2030, when civilian air traffic will outgrow Lindberg.
Goodman: "That's like asking to look into a glass ball and say what's the future going to hold, we never would have we would have left El Toro I'm not going to stand here and say that's not going to happen to Miramar, but I heard from two three-star generals that that wasn't the case, so Miramar's going to be around for a while."
A question about the possibility of replacing a military airport with a civilian airport was quickly dismissed. Joint use appears unlikely under Defense Department policy, but the working group recommended studying the possibility anyway . Alison St John, KPBS news.
