City of San Diego Mayor-elect Jerry Sanders and Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rohn met face to face Friday for the first time in Tijuana. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
The two officials came together to honor businesses from both sides of the border. They handed out awards to companies that have shown exemplary service to the environment and communities. Economic development is a key issue for both men, along with the environment and security.
Both Sanders and Hank believe San Diego and Tijuana must have close ties. Hank appointed a bi-national liaison when he was elected a year ago who's stationed at SANDAG. Sanders says he'll also appoint someone to spearhead border issues.
Former mayor Dick Murphy displayed little interest in maintaining a relationship with Tijuana. But Hank is hopeful he and Sanders will usher in a new era. Hank joked that Sanders' law enforcement background would be especially helpful given Tijuana's current security issues. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
