A Grossmont School Board member has made the virtually unprecedented proposal of turning all of the district's high schools into charter schools. Charters are taxpayer-funded schools that are free of many of the state regulations that traditional public schools must follow. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.
School board member Ron Nehring wants the Grossmont Union High School District to study the possibility of converting all of its high schools into charters, all at the same time. One high school, Helix, is already a charter.
Nehring says Grossmont should become a charter district so parents will have a bigger say in their children's education.
Nehring: "Parents are absolutely critical and their voice must always be heard in every decision that is made at an individual school site."
But Bruce Seaman of the Grossmont Education Association says the proposal is part of the radical agenda of a school board that wants to eliminate public schools.
The proposal will get its first official hearing before the board next month. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS news.
