San Diego County's west facing beaches could see some dramatic wave action by tomorrow afternoon. A big swell pushing out of the central Pacific Ocean could generate waves that top out at 20 feet. National Weather Service forecasters say waves could start building today, but they won't peak until tomorrow afternoon. Waves will likely average about 12 to 15 feet.
San Diego Lifeguard Rich Stropky says the rough surf will create dangerous rip currents.
Stropky: "Rip currents are pretty dynamic, so typically yeah, you have a lot more water coming in to the beaches so it needs to find its way back out to the ocean."
Stropky says extra lifeguards have been called to patrol area beaches. He expects the number of rescues to jump dramatically. He says Sunset Cliffs and beaches south of La Jolla are expected to be the most troublesome areas.
