Border Patrol agents say if you can dream it, drug smugglers have probably tried it. The remarks come after agents discovered more than 500 pounds of marijuana loaded into a fake SDGE truck Monday.
Border Patrol spokesman Kurstan Rossberg says this was the second attempt to smuggle marijuana in a fraudulent SDGE vehicle. His agency seized 1,200 pounds out of the back of one in 2004. Rossberg says smugglers have tried using other work vehicles, too.
Rossberg: "We also had in April, 2005 an orange work utility truck used to smuggle 630 pounds of marijuana. And we've also seen similar attempts in Arizona, vehicles disguised to look like FedEx trucks, school buses and even Border Patrol Vehicles."
Rossberg says during this most recent incident, the driver was wearing a reflective orange work vest that was ultimately his downfall. Rossberg says the Border Patrol helicopter used the reflective vest to track the driver after he fled his vehicle.
