The City of Tijuana and the State of Baja California promised to collaborate today to make Tijuana safer. State and local officials signed an accord detailing their collaboration on public security going forward. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Three months ago Tijuana's business community began exerting public pressure on state and local authorities to do something about Tijuana's high crime rate. There'd been at least a homicide a day since the start of the year. And businessmen claimed kidnappings were at an all time high. They blamed the authorities for allowing crime to spiral out of control, alleging law enforcement was either too inept or too corrupt to crackdown.
Jaime Valdovino is the President of Tijuana's Chamber of Commerce. He says the new accord is a step in the right direction.
Valdovino: "We still haven't had the results that the city needs, but it's the beginning. And I can assure you we are going to keep on demanding better results."
Going forward the city and state pledged to investigate crimes jointly and share information. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
